Social Value at Whitfield & Brown

Built in the North. Built for the North. Built to Make a Difference.

Sustainability & Social Value

At Whitfield & Brown, social value isn’t a buzzword – it’s who we are. With over 50 years rooted in the North West, we live here, work here and invest here. Our commitment goes far beyond delivering buildings. We make sure every project leaves a lasting legacy for the people and communities around us. More than 85% of our supply chain is local, keeping spend, skills and opportunity right here in the region. And because we care about the places we build in, we align everything we do with national standards including the Social Value Act 2012, PPN 06/20, the National TOMs Framework and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Our Approach is a Structured, Measurable & Meaningful Model

We use a site‑specific Theory of Change (ToC) model to plan, deliver and measure social value. This ensures every commitment is relevant, evidence‑based and rooted in real community priorities.

We start by mapping and engaging local stakeholders – councils, schools, job centres, community groups and our supply chain – to understand what really matters in their area

Using ONS data, IMD rankings and community insight, we create a local profile to ensure our commitments tackle real issues such as youth unemployment, low skills, health inequalities or social isolation.

We define:

  • Inputs (what we invest)
  • Activities (what we do)
  • Outputs (what you see)
  • Outcomes (what changes)
  • Impact (what lasts)

To make sure our social value isn’t just well‑intentioned but well‑delivered, we follow a clear, structured approach to measurement and evaluation. This ensures every commitment is trackable, evidenced and aligned with recognised national frameworks.

Social value activities are integrated into the programme and tracked monthly. Our supply chain is required to contribute toward apprenticeships, volunteering, training and sustainability actions.

We provide clear reporting backed by evidence – photos, attendance sheets, KPIs, case studies and independently validated results. No guesswork. No jargon. Just real impact.

What Social Value Means to Us

We’re proud Northern contractors, driven by purpose, not tick‑boxes. For us:

✨ If we can’t point to someone whose life we’ve improved, we’ve missed the mark.

✨ Impact is personal – not just numerical.

✨ Success is measured in stronger communities, greener futures and lasting opportunities.

Social value is the foundation of how we do business and the reason we get out of bed in the morning
