Whitfield & Brown delivered the Blythewood development at Digmoor in Skelmersdale for Tawd Valley Developments. The scheme provides 12 high quality apartments for social rent as Phase 1 of a wider development, responding to local housing need while celebrating the area’s heritage and identity.

Following engagement with the Skelmersdale Heritage Society, the completed development is now known as Grimshaw Delf. The name was inspired by historic Ordnance Survey mapping of the area and reflects a conscious effort to embed local history and identity into the scheme, strengthening its connection to place and community.

The development comprises nine one-bedroom apartments and three two-bedroom apartments, including ground floor homes designed with full level access and wet rooms to support inclusivity and accessibility. Built using Modern Methods of Construction, the homes are energy efficient and designed to achieve a high B or A energy rating, supporting reduced energy consumption and long-term affordability for residents.

Sustainable and considerate design

Blythewood has been delivered with a strong focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility. In addition to energy efficient construction methods, the scheme incorporates biodiversity measures including bird and bat boxes, native planting and external lighting designed to dim at night to minimise impact on local wildlife.

These measures ensure the development sits harmoniously within its surroundings while contributing positively to local biodiversity and environmental wellbeing.

Collaborative delivery and community engagement

The successful delivery of Blythewood was supported by effective collaboration between Whitfield & Brown, the client and the wider project team. Throughout construction, a focus on quality, safety and attention to detail was maintained to achieve a defect free handover.

Community engagement also formed an important part of the project. Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service were welcomed to site to carry out training exercises in a real-world environment, supporting emergency preparedness while reinforcing Whitfield & Brown’s commitment to safety and community partnership. The project team were also pleased to welcome local representatives to site to view progress as the scheme moved towards completion.

Community impact

Blythewood (Grimshaw Delf) provides much needed affordable homes for the Digmoor community while delivering wider social and environmental value. By combining energy efficient construction, inclusive design and respect for local heritage, the development demonstrates Whitfield & Brown’s commitment to building homes that support people, place and long-term community benefit.

The scheme represents another successful addition to Whitfield & Brown’s residential portfolio, delivered through collaboration, thoughtful design and a shared commitment to quality.
