St Joseph’s Care Home, Manchester

Whitfield & Brown supported the Little Sisters of the Poor through a long-term phased refurbishment of St Joseph’s Care Home in Manchester, delivering improvements that enhanced resident comfort and modernised facilities while maintaining the day-to-day operation of the home.

The programme, which has been ongoing since 2016, involved multiple refurbishment phases across different areas of the building, reflecting a trusted and collaborative relationship with the client and design team.

refurbishment in a live care environment

St Joseph’s Care Home is a 53-bed facility providing accommodation and care for elderly residents within a long-established religious community. The refurbishment works were carefully designed to enhance the homely environment of the care home while improving the quality of accommodation and facilities.

Works across the phases included refurbishment of both first and second floor areas, with careful planning required to ensure that disruption to residents and the Convent Sisters was minimised throughout.

Improvements to resident accommodation

The programme included the renewal of bedroom finishes and the replacement of windows, alongside the upgrading of building services to improve comfort and performance.

A key element of the scheme was the reconfiguration of bedrooms and communal areas to create new en-suite accommodation, enhancing privacy, dignity and independence for residents.

Additional works included minor structural alterations, installation of new internal doors, and the introduction of improved sanitaryware, contributing to a higher quality living environment across the facility.

Phased delivery and operational constraints

All works were delivered within a live care home environment, requiring detailed planning and sequencing to coordinate activities around the daily routines of residents and staff.

Restricted working hours were implemented to minimise disruption, with certain specialist activities undertaken during night-time operations, including flooring works, asbestos removal and ceiling installations.

The project team maintained close communication with the client throughout, ensuring that the ongoing care provision was not impacted and that the wellbeing of residents remained the highest priority.

Long-term client relationship

Whitfield & Brown has been continuously engaged on site throughout the refurbishment programme, successfully delivering multiple phases of work and building a strong, trusted relationship with the Little Sisters of the Poor.

This continuity has enabled the project team to retain valuable site knowledge and deliver each phase efficiently, while maintaining a consistent approach to quality and resident care.

Community impact

The refurbishment of St Joseph’s Care Home has significantly improved the living environment for residents, delivering modern, comfortable accommodation that aligns with the values of the Little Sisters of the Poor in providing compassionate care.

The scheme demonstrates Whitfield & Brown’s expertise in delivering sensitive healthcare refurbishments within live environments, combining careful planning, technical capability and a strong understanding of the needs of vulnerable users.
