Whitfield & Brown was appointed by Bury Metropolitan Borough Council to deliver a new single storey sports pavilion and changing facility in Radcliffe, designed to strengthen grassroots football provision and encourage increased community participation in sport.
The project commenced with the demolition of the existing structure, followed by the installation of new drainage services and the creation of 83 car parking spaces to support increased use of the site. These early works were critical to enabling the delivery of a modern, accessible sporting facility within an established residential area.
Pavilion facilities and layout
The completed pavilion provides a comprehensive range of facilities, including team changing rooms, officials’ changing accommodation, shower and toilet facilities, accessible changing areas, and disabled toilets. The building also includes a multi‑use social room with kitchen facilities, a reception and staff office, and essential ancillary rooms to support day‑to‑day operation.
The layout has been designed to be practical, inclusive and robust, supporting both organised matches and wider community use throughout the year.
Associated sports infrastructure
Running in parallel with the pavilion construction was the installation of a new external floodlit artificial grass pitch. While the specialist AGP works were delivered by a designated contractor, Whitfield & Brown coordinated the overall programme to ensure seamless integration between the new playing surface and the pavilion facilities.
The new AGP significantly improves the quality and flexibility of sporting provision on site, enabling a variety of youth and adult football pitches and training areas to operate within a single enclosed playing space.
Community impact
The Sports Pavilion Radcliffe development delivers a modern, accessible community sports facility that supports grassroots football, youth development and increased physical activity. Funded by Bury Council, Radcliffe FC, the Football Foundation and the Lancashire County FA, the scheme plays an important role in strengthening local sports infrastructure and increasing participation across partner organisations.
The project demonstrates Whitfield & Brown’s experience in delivering community‑focused sports facilities through collaborative working with local authorities, funding bodies and specialist contractors, creating long‑term assets that benefit both residents and sporting organisations.
