Whitfield & Brown delivered a transformative project at Pickerings Pasture in Widnes for Halton Borough Council, creating a modern visitor centre and café designed to enhance the experience of local residents and visitors to the nature reserve.

Working closely with the Council, the project aimed to revitalise Pickerings Pasture while respecting its landscape and ecological value. The works involved the demolition of the former ranger cabin and the construction of a contemporary new facility, finished with black cladding, large areas of glazing and roof‑mounted solar panels to support sustainable operation.

Design aligned with the natural environment

The new visitor centre was deliberately designed to complement the surrounding landscape and maximise views across the River Mersey. Large windows create a strong visual connection between internal spaces and the external environment, reinforcing the building’s role as a welcoming gateway to the reserve.

Internally, the facility provides an open, light and inviting environment with improved amenities for visitors, enabling the building to function as both a café and a flexible community space.

Community use and stewardship

Since completion, the new centre has become a focal point for community activity at Pickerings Pasture. The building supports gatherings, events and engagement led by The Friends of Pickerings Pasture, strengthening local stewardship of the site and encouraging wider use of the reserve.

The development plays an important role in promoting education, social interaction and wellbeing within a high‑quality natural setting.

Community impact

The Pickerings Pasture project demonstrates Whitfield & Brown’s commitment to delivering community‑focused developments that balance contemporary design with environmental sensitivity. By creating an inclusive and sustainable hub within a valued open space, the scheme enhances local leisure provision and supports long‑term engagement with the natural environment.

Pickerings Pasture stands as a strong example of Whitfield & Brown’s experience in delivering public realm and community facilities that create lasting value for people, place and neighbourhoods.
