Pensby Wood Day Care Centre, Wirral

Whitfield & Brown completed the extension and refurbishment of Pensby Wood Day Care Centre for Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council, delivering enhanced specialist facilities for people with profound disabilities. The £1.1 million scheme provides a modern, inclusive environment designed to support a wide range of sensory, therapeutic and recreational activities.

The project transformed the existing centre into a more accessible and engaging facility, significantly improving the quality of care and expanding the range of services available to users.

Specialist facilities and inclusive design

The development involved the construction of two single-storey steel-framed extensions, creating new dining and games areas alongside a dedicated hydrotherapy pool.

A small extension to the entrance lobby improved accessibility, while internal demolition and reconfiguration works allowed existing care spaces to be adapted to better support users’ needs.

The completed facility provides a wide range of specialist environments, including:

  • Sensory and interactive rooms featuring specialist “bag books”
  • A dedicated music room and creative activity spaces
  • A spa experience and relaxation areas, including a chill-out zone
  • Sports and physical activity spaces, including football provision and a cycle track
  • Mobility hoists and specialist equipment to support accessibility

These facilities have been carefully designed to provide enriching sensory experiences and support participation in a variety of activities, helping users maximise independence, enjoyment and wellbeing.

Construction and live environment delivery

The project included significant internal demolition, stripping out and replacement of partitions, ceilings, fittings and fixtures, alongside the installation of new mechanical and electrical services including air handling units and water systems.

Pensby Wood Day Care Centre remained partially occupied throughout the works, requiring carefully planned sequencing and close coordination with staff to maintain a safe environment and ensure continuity of care.

Whitfield & Brown implemented controlled working practices and effective communication with stakeholders, minimising disruption while prioritising user safety and comfort.

External works and community investment

The scheme included the creation of a new sensory garden, providing an engaging outdoor environment designed to support therapeutic activity and relaxation.

The garden was partially funded through the Tesco Bags of Help campaign and includes specialist features such as an accessible swing.

Additional external works included landscaping, drainage and improvements to access, enhancing the overall setting and usability of the centre.

Community impact

Pensby Wood Day Care Centre delivers vital support for people with a range of profound disabilities, providing a safe, inclusive and stimulating environment that encourages participation in a wide variety of activities.

The redevelopment has significantly enhanced the quality and flexibility of the facilities, creating a modern environment that supports both care provision and meaningful social interaction.

The project reflects Whitfield & Brown’s experience in delivering sensitive healthcare and community environments, combining thoughtful design, technical expertise and a strong commitment to improving outcomes for users and the wider community.
