Whitfield & Brown delivered a sustainable extension and series of alterations at Kingsmead Primary School in Northwich to support the school’s growth from one form entry to one and a half form entry. The award‑winning Eco School required additional teaching space and modern facilities that aligned with its strong environmental ethos.
The project comprised two new single storey glulam portal frame extensions constructed on driven piled foundations, alongside internal remodelling works to improve circulation and functionality. A new winter garden and main entrance were also created, enhancing the quality and flexibility of learning spaces for pupils and staff.
Hall and classroom extensions
The existing school hall was extended to increase floor space, incorporating a new warm deck roof with rooflights and solar panels. Alterations to the kitchen servery and new storage areas were completed as part of the hall extension.
A separate classroom extension delivered three new teaching rooms, together with associated toilets, cloakroom facilities, toy storage and covered play areas. The new classrooms connect directly to the winter garden, providing a light‑filled environment that supports both learning and wellbeing.
External works and sustainability
External works included the creation of new playground areas for different year groups, new parking provision, drainage upgrades and soft landscaping. Underfloor heating was installed throughout the extensions, and sustainable design principles were embedded across the scheme to complement the original environmentally led school building.
The works were carefully managed within a live school environment, with the majority of construction activity undertaken during term time and strict controls in place to protect pupils, staff and visitors.

“Wayne has been an ambassador for Whitfield and Brown and I know that without his management, including being extremely hands‑on and leading by example, I would not have the impression of your company that I have.”
