Contract Award: Stamford Park Primary School Roof Works

Whitfield & Brown is pleased to announce that we have been appointed by Trafford Council to deliver essential roof works at Stamford Park Primary School in Hale.

The procurement was delivered via STAR Procurement, with Amey Consulting appointed to provide retained professional services on behalf of the Council. The appointment reflects Whitfield & Brown’s experience in delivering refurbishment and maintenance works to occupied educational buildings, including those with historic and listed status.

A Historic School with National Significance

Stamford Park Primary School is a Grade II‑listed building of significant architectural and heritage value. Designed by noted school specialist Henry Lord, the original buildings date back to the early twentieth century and form part of a wider historic school site that includes the former master’s house and playground shelters. The entire site was formally added to the National Heritage List in 2020, recognising its importance as an intact example of early twentieth‑century school design.

Constructed in red brick and retaining a number of distinctive original architectural features, the building is a well‑known local landmark. However, like many historic school buildings, it has faced increasing maintenance challenges over time, with the condition of the roof identified as a priority area requiring investment.

Regional Recognition of the Need for Investment

The importance of investment in Stamford Park Primary School has also been highlighted at a regional level. During a visit to the school in early 2025, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham recognised both the historic significance of the building and the challenges associated with maintaining a Grade II‑listed school, noting the difficulty schools can face in securing funding for specialist repairs.

His visit followed appeals from school leaders for support to address long‑standing building issues, including roof condition and weather‑related deterioration. The visit helped to draw wider attention to the pressures facing historic school estates and the specialist nature of works required to protect them.

Supporting Long‑Term Sustainability

The school, created following the amalgamation of the former infant and junior schools, continues to serve the local Hale community and accommodates a growing pupil population. Addressing the condition of the roof is a critical step in safeguarding the building, improving weather resilience and ensuring that teaching and learning can continue in a safe and secure environment.

Investment in projects such as this plays a vital role in preserving historic education buildings while ensuring they remain fit for modern use and future generations.

Our Approach

Delivering works to a Grade II‑listed, occupied school requires a careful and considered approach. Whitfield & Brown will work closely with Trafford Council, Amey Consulting and the wider project team to ensure that all works are undertaken sensitively, with full regard for the building’s historic fabric and setting.

Key priorities for the project include maintaining a safe environment for pupils, staff and visitors, minimising disruption during the school day and embedding heritage considerations throughout the works. Our experience of working within live school environments and on heritage refurbishment projects allows us to plan works thoroughly and communicate clearly with all stakeholders.

Looking Ahead

Whitfield & Brown is proud to be supporting the long‑term future of Stamford Park Primary School and contributing to the preservation of an important local heritage asset. Works will be delivered with a focus on safety, quality and collaboration, ensuring that the building continues to serve the community for many years to come.
