Supporting clinical performance, safety and long-term operational resilience

KEY FEATURES
Whitfield & Brown designed and constructed the Cherwell Village Apartments in Heywood, delivering a purpose-built supported living development comprising 17 individual apartments for people with physical and learning disabilities. The scheme created a safe, modern and supportive environment that enables residents to live independently while benefiting from dedicated on-site support.
Delivered for PossAbilities, a social enterprise supporting vulnerable people, the development provides high-quality accommodation designed to meet the needs of residents, many of whom are living independently for the first time.
Each apartment has been carefully designed to provide a self-contained living space, including a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and living area, creating a comfortable and homely environment for residents.
The scheme supports independent living while ensuring access to appropriate care and assistance, with facilities that promote dignity, safety and wellbeing. The apartments were designed as “a real place to call home”, reflecting a strong focus on quality and resident experience.
The development was constructed using traditional building methods, supported by full water, gas and electrical installations and comprehensive associated site works.
External works included landscaping, drainage, roads and car parking, delivered in accordance with highways and sewer adoption agreements.
The scheme also incorporated steel frame construction with precast elements and carefully considered detailing to ensure durability, compliance and long-term performance.
A key feature of the development is its co-location with the Cherwell Wellbeing Garden & Farm and a dedicated social lounge, creating a unique environment that extends beyond residential accommodation.
This integrated setting enables residents to live, work, volunteer, learn new skills and socialise within a vibrant and supportive community. The development provides opportunities for social interaction and personal growth while fostering a strong sense of belonging.
“We worked with Whitfield & Brown because they understood that we wanted to create homes that we would be proud to live in ourselves. That’s what they have done, and it is helping transform the lives of people with learning disabilities who have their own front door for the first time”
